#AfterMeToo Symposium

Town Hall at the Globe and Mail Centre.

Town Hall at the Globe and Mail Centre.

It was a whirlwind of knowledge, creative and professional minds joining for a deep-dive discussion about the issue of sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry. Our full two day event, of roundtable discussions, with the goal to find survivor centred solutions revealed both systemic problems, as well as actionable resolutions. We, at After Me Too will release a report in the new year, along with our roundtable videos with industry professionals, and experts in law, trauma, and organizational change.

Our town hall at the Globe and Mail Centre was a packed event. With keynote from federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, our aim to is demand better.

I believe that we can achieve this. Here are some of the recommendations that we have suggested to the industry.

The recommendations include:

  • Establishing an independent industry body that could both investigate harassment complaints and penalize perpetrators by such means as ejecting them from industry associations;
  • Establishing a fund, to be paid into by industry members in the manner of a benefit or pension fund, that would pay for mental-health support for victims of harassment;
  • Harmonizing policies and reporting mechanisms of existing entertainment-industry unions;
  • Providing mandatory training for all members of the industry;
  • Expanding the definition of the workplace to include social events and any situation where there is a business relationship;
  • Developing online reporting systems so complainants can report and repeat perpetrators can be tracked;
  • Calling on governments to provide better access to mental-health supports.
